These two volumes form a part, complete in itself, of the many-volume series Kojitsu Sosho [Library of Ancient Customs] originally published in the early 19th century and re-issued over several years, printed to a high standard, in the late Meiji period. The series describes and illustrates the customs, ceremonies, costume and regalia of the court and aristocracy of several centuries earlier.

Issued monthly 1888-91, a total of 36 issues, each issue has 8-10 full-page plates, most in colour, some folding, and numerous illustrations in the text, with the fine colour covers for each issue bound in at the end of each volume of 6 issues. Pages unnumbered. All volume titles present. Large 4to., contemporary 1/2 red morocco and red cloth boards, spine gilt with raised bands. A couple of carefully re-coloured light scuffs on a few of the corners. The marbled endpapers have some pale spotting otherwise the contents are clean and crisp. Au$3000
A fine set of a luxury periodical published simultaneously in Paris as 'Le Japon Artistique'. S.Bing (1838-1905) was an art critic, connoisseur, and dealer in Japanese objets d'art. His shop/gallery in Paris, 'l'Art Nouveau' became a focus for advanced taste in the 1890's.

Each volume has 21 double page colour woodcuts and a single page colour woodcut at the beginning and end (vol. 3 has one only, at the beginning), 4 pages of text and a colophon page. Publisher's Japanese style 4-hole binding in pale cream wrappers with very pale blue silhouette pattern, title labels present, 250 x 165mm. Each volume has been re-sewn into the original wrappers with green silk thread matching fragments formerly present. In the top margin of the final page of each volume facing the colophon page is an ownership stamp 'M.A.M' in pale green. A very good copy with excellent impressions and colour. Au$1650

There are some very occasional small patches of worming in the blank margins. About 20 leaves in vols. 2 and 3 have some small patches of worming wthin text with very minor effect on legibility. The plays were issued singly, then as collections. This appears to be three collections each with a vivid titlepage, issued bound as one by the publisher.
EISEN (Artist) An elaborately folding puzzle toy, opening step by step in a succession of 'boxes' and finally to a fine colour woodcut print of a beauty (bijin) by Eisen. c.1830 Made from a variety of coloured, patterned and embossed papers, when closed (still with original ties) it measures 27.5 x 14cms, and opens to 52 x 26cms. Somewhat worn and dusty exterior in closed state, some slight fading of some of the coloured papers internally, and some damage to one of the boxes, it is still in acceptable condition and nice working order. The enclosed print is clean and bright. Au$550
